You'll get the most out of San diego if you live where you fit best and you get to get a really saturated experience and venture out whenever you want. You can get blackout drunk (and probably get an std) in PB, be a tech bro in gaslamp, hipster in South Park, crunchy mom in LA jolla or balboa park, country girl in east county, beach bum in ocean Beach, linen pants wearing elite in Coronado, you just have to find your vibe and try to afford to live in wherever you fit. It is definitely a place where you can be any person any day of the week. I would say don't expect it to be like Hawaii, our water and waves suck, but you can enjoy a beachy life if you can afford it. More family friendly, more yuppie crunchy moms, slower paced, but still a big city where things are open throughout the night.
If you're looking for Hawaii in san diego you can probably find a taste of it, but only in small pockets. People can easily insulate themselves from the rest of the city. I hate LA, SF feels like NY but kinder, and I've always described LA as California's "downtown" and San Diego/Orange County being California's suburbs. Rancho Santa Fe: Wealthier than La Jolla but not as famous, probably the only predominantly republican voting area of San Diego that isn't in the boonies North County Coast: (Del mar/Encinitas/Cardiff): wealthy beach coastal cities low key materialistic The earlier you get here the more money you've made on real estate appreciation. North county inland (Carmel valley, Poway, RB, Escondido, Vista, San Marcos): quieter, more traditional family oriented. La Jolla: established old money, or people who have made money elsewhere want somewhere comfortable to retire/settle UTC/Sorrento valley: younger educated people who work in high tech fields like biotech, defense contracting, ITĬonvoy/Mira Mesa: lots of Asian stores and influence Ocean beach: similar to PB but with some remnants of hippie counterculture Pacific beach: probably the most stereotypical "san diego" chill laid back vibe, younger ppl there on weekend nights try and recreate their college partying experience Weekend nights are like a Vegas crowd warmup with all the loud bars and nightclubsĬoronado: ex navy who leave military then have high paying jobs in US gov contracting and stick around for proximity to beach and small community feel North Park: younger, more liberal, basically the hipster area of SDĭowntown: homeless people, younger rich yuppy types, older couples with nice condos enjoying DINK (double income no kids).
